Harry Connick, Jr. mentors the American Idol top 5 finalists tonight---the contestants will be singing Sinatra songs. Judges comments and song choices just ahead:
Highlights from tonight's American Idol Top 5 performances:
Harry Connick, Jr. will be accompanying each Idol contestant tonight during their performances. (as well as some of his own band members)
Aaron Kelly sings "Fly Me To The Moon"
Judges:
Randy: Says he's looking to see who's in it to win it tonight---tells Aaron he did a really good job.
Ellen: (Teases Harry about the piano being off key)"You really pulled that off!"
Kara: "I thought it was good...but compared to last week, it wasn't as strong."
Simon: "I'm more with Kara on this one...Frank was the king of cool and if he was alive, you were just a mouse. The vocals toward the end were a bit corny. You do try hard."
Casey James sings "Blue Skies"
Judges:
Randy: "This was your worst performance for me....pitchy till the last note. Didn't work."
Ellen: (Teases Harry about the piano being on stage) "Felt very stiff to me.....didn't feel effortless, I agree with Randy, I'm sorry."
Kara: "At least you held some notes.....hadn't heard you do that before, but it kinda sounded like a lamb."
Simon: "Good news, band was great.....bad news, you weren't fantastic. You came across a bit embarassed and uncomfortable."
(Harry says Casey did much better in rehearsal....)
Crystal Bowersox sings "Summer Wind"
Judges:
Randy: "It was one of your more subdued performances. A little sleepy."
Ellen: "I was nervous for you at the first....would have liked to see you loosen up a little more. So many different sides to you. You're versatile"
Kara: "Like your phrasing...showed you could hold your own in the Sinatra dept."
Simon: "Don't know if I would have chosen this song for you...first half too jazzy; second half was better. You've had two 'okay weeks'.....it's about being in it to win it. I expect better."
Michael Lynche sings "The Way You Look Tonight"
Judges:
Randy: "Unbelievable arrangement; unbelievable vocal; Mike is in it to win it."
Ellen: "You seemed to have the most comfort on stage compared to everyone else. Smooth; a lot of charisma"
Kara: "You found the drama in the song; took us on a journey and didn't lose yourself."
Simon: "This is been a tricky night. If I'm being honest with you, the first three performances were just okay and now with you, that's all changed. What I loved about that is that you listened and everyone worked on that. Fantastic, well done."
Lee Dewzye sings "That's Life"
Judges:
Randy: "Another great arrangement and dude, you stayed your rocker self; I loved it."
Ellen: "At first, I was distracted by Harry's organ, but.... if this were the last night of performances, you would have just won this whole thing"
Kara: "I wanna ask you a question...do you think you can win?" Lee says yes. She tells him to go home and write it down 100 times. You can win this thing.
Simon: "Harry helped bring out your personality and your confidence. You gave it 100% and by far, the best performance of the night."
Lee wins the night.........results tomorrow night on Fox. (and here!)
